Abdul Shayek (Creative Associate)
Hi I’m Abdul.
In London, I have freelanced for a variety of different companies ranging from grassroots community led organisations to the RSC, Almeida Theatre and Theatre Royal Stratford East. I also initiated the founding of a Youth Arts company called Youth of Creative Arts, which since its inception in 2005 has expanded the grass roots work and has now a production arm. Amongst the many projects YOCA has delivered and produced, the most notable was a short film 'Fiver' which was premiered at the BFI and also a play called 'White Riot' by Natalie Mitchell which was initially at the Space and then transferred to Barking Broadway. The last project before I left that the company was working on 'Life on the Praca Roosevelt' by Dea Loher, was striving to be a site-specific piece set in the heart of Stratford. All projects were often delivered successfully due to the help and assistance from volunteers and freelance artists.
I have also created site specific shows, notably a piece in a Ely Cathedral with a 100 strong choir and orchestra.
I have a great passion for creating work and believe that regardless of who you are creating work with, be it professionals, young people or community participants, we should strive to create the best work possible, there should be no definition, all work should be equal in it’s stature. Work, which is engaging, challenging and constantly pushing boundaries.
