What would life be like without time to play? Three leading young Welsh artists will create an outdoor theatre adventure like no other.
‘Enter our imaginary world and never underestimate what you see’
The Beach will be a brand new theatre game, commissioned by National Theatre Wales in partnership with Hide&Seek. From fairgrounds to Carnival, from situationism to cheese-rolling, playing games in public has long been a part of popular culture. National Theatre Wales has asked three leading young artists to create a new outdoor gaming event for the beaches of North Wales.
Theatre games are interactive events in which the audience or participants’ experience is determined by their own choices. Participants are given set aims, which they must achieve within the rules of the game. Playfulness and spontaneity are the watchwords.
Hide&Seek make social games and playful experiences. They founded the UK's first festival of pervasive games in London in 2007, and run the Sandpit, a thriving network of artists, game designers and players. They produce events with cultural venues around the UK, and work with brands, broadcasters and agencies to help them understand participation and community.

‘I grew up in a lovely village in Wales called Bethel. Every summer, someone would be making a den, which I loved. Right now, I’m a multi-platform writer – which lots of people think of as being TV on the internet, but it’s much more interesting than that. When you watch TV or traditional theatre, you have all the information in one place – imagine that information scattered all around you and you find the pieces, put them together and create the full world – that’s what multiplatform is. It can work as a drama series or as a game or an adventure and that’s exciting! It might be a bit scary to take the first step and who knows what will happen, but there is lots of excitement when people take part. Come along and meet us, enter our imaginary world and never underestimate what you see, hear or feel – you will always be thinking ‘Is that a clue’? ‘Is that the next level of the game?’ Keep your eyes, ears and everything else peeled. See you on the beach.’
