Mundo Paralelo background and booking information

NoFit State is the UK’s leading contemporary circus company. NoFit State Circus was founded in 1986 by five friends (Ali Williams, Tom Rack, Peter Gregory, Richie Turner and Dave Id) who put together a street circus show for Live Aid and had so much fun that they decided to set up a circus company.

NoFit State have worked with Welsh National Opera, performed at the Big Chill and the Roundhouse and worked internationally. Rooted in a specifically Welsh tradition of community arts in which the creative voice is an expression of and grows from collective identity, Nofit State has developed a unique performance form.

Milford Haven’s Torch Theatre is a distinguished producing theatre. It celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2007 with an ambitious refurbishment project.

Ali Williams, Creative Director, NoFit State Circus

‘NoFit State is considered to be the greatest touring circus in the UK. It was started 23 years ago in Cardiff by a group of friends to avoid ‘getting a proper job’. Our philosophy was to be bigger and better each year and if we didn’t achieve this, we would quit. Fast forward to today and our growth has been huge. We’ve worked with Welsh National Opera, performed at the Big Chill and the Roundhouse and work internationally. Our shows are edgy, grungy and sensual. Often people leave our shows in tears or laughing because it has touched them in some way. We frequently work with the audiences and performers in the same space – that can give a real energy to a show. We don’t know yet what this National Theatre Wales show is going to be like – if we predict too much, we don’t allow room for experiment – essential in making something new. What will be different is that we’ll be working away from our tent and in a theatre space. We’re also looking to reinvent the art form again: working with a theatre director and the magic of theatre, with a real intensity of focus.’

This section gives an overview of the company and how it got to be the UK's most exciting contemporary circus and talks about what has happenned along the way. There are plenty of stories to tell, they are not all on the website (some are definately unpublishable), but one day we promise to write a book or make a movie.

Theatr Torch Theatre

The Torch is a celebrated producing theatre company, and the striking new theatre was re-launched in the spring of 2008 with a highly acclaimed version of the award-winning musical The Hired Man. The award winning Torch Theatre Company boasts an impressive repertoire including One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest, Neville’s Island, Abigail’s Party, The Little Shop of Horrors, Of Mice and Men and Educating Rita. It’s Christmas show is always a firm family favourite.

The intimate Main House offers a wonderful space to see professionals perform. With just under 300 comfortable seats, everyone feels close to the action. The multi-million pound makeover has also created a new Studio Theatre, sponsored by Milford Haven Port Authority, which now allows the Torch to offer a choice of films and live performances between the two spaces every night of the week. In addition to the Torch’s own professional productions, there is a regular programme of first rate touring shows ranging from musical theatre, drama and comedy, dance, opera, lectures and the best in live music. The Studio Theatre may also be used as a meeting place and is a valuable community facility.
