Steve Dimmick
Haia, how are you today?
Being an NTW trustee requires you to be able to consider situations from a variety of angles, including your own, and make tough decisions on important matters. As a director of a national company, there is an onus on you to choose the 'right' thing from a myriad of options. It's challenging work!
I'm a father of three, so much of my evenings and weekends involve cycling the kids to, and then coaching them in their various sporting endeavours.
My day job is as Commercial Director for Awen Cultural Trust. Awen runs theatres, music venues, libraries, community centres and a hotel in a country park. Every day I get to work to make people's lives better. From those watching a show or a film at our venues to those walking down the aisle at Bryngarw House to the adults with learning disabilities, we employ at our gardening and carpentry centres, B-Leaf and Wood-B.
I am also a Trustee Director of Literature Wales and a Parent Governor at Ysgol Plasmawr. I'm also the founder of Cardiff's longest-running book club, CardiffRead, meeting monthly at Canton Library.
I do what I do at Awen to, hopefully, be an example to my kids. I want them to know you can work in a role where your focus is on improving other's lives. I volunteer with NTW and Literature Wales to improve the promotion of arts, heritage and culture and to better Wales' understanding of the dramatic arts and literature. I volunteer as a Parent Governor to help Plasmawr become the best school it can be, especially in providing wellbeing and mental health support to the children there. I run CardiffRead to ensure I keep reading a wide variety of books. Oh, and to get my monthly fix of meeting people much cleverer than me who are very happy to point out everything I missed in the books we read!
What matters to me? Good question! <long pause> What matters to me is leaving the world in a better place for future generations. 18 months ago I sold my car and since have only used active travel to get around. The impact this will have, as 1 in 8 billion, is microscopic. I know this. I also know that if I can persuade a few more and they can persuade a few more then, rather ironically, we'll be 'on the road' to change.
